Musical Director - Andee Birkett

After graduating from Canterbury Christchurch University in 2004, Andee enjoyed 10 years as a freelance bass guitarist and upright bassist.  In 2015 she joined the Corps of Army Music, at a time when the Corps were broadening their musical capabilities.  She is currently assigned to The Band of The Queen’s Division and has been selected to start the Musical Direction Course in Jan 2019.

Andee has performed in musical theatre, touring with the PMA production of 7 Brides for 7 Brothers and almost a decade of panto productions for Evolution Productions at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury.  Jazz and Blues are Andee’s passion and she has performed with many great British Jazz musicians, most notably vocalist Tina May in her show featuring the songs of Edith Piaf.  Andee was a founding member of all girl blues band Chix Wiv Pix and assumed the role of musical director for the all-female blues collective Venus Nights lead by vocalist Fiona McElroy.

In 2012 Andee formed Scarlett Rae & the Cherry Reds, essentially a rockabilly inspired trio fronted by herself on upright bass and lead vocals. The band released their debut album Crash Landing in 2013, a collection of original songs written and produced by herself and drummer/guitarist Chris Wong.

In 2016 Andee was invited to accompany saxophonist Jess Gillam at the woodwind finals and the semi finals of BBC Young Musician of the Year. Jess reached the finals of the competition that year and subsequently signed to the Decca Classics record label.  Andee performed on Jess’s forthcoming debut album and continues to perform regularly alongside Jess at concert venues across the country.

Andee took up the position of musical director of Biggin Hill Concert Band in July 2018.  It is her first post as conductor and has so far thoroughly enjoyed her time with the band.  Concert programmes are relaxed and fun reflecting the character and personality of the members of the ensemble!!
