A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an aspiring Conductor/MD commencing September 2026 with our enthusiastic amateur community concert band based in Keston, Bromley, Kent.  

 

The position should appeal to both those starting out or wishing to develop their music journey.  Interested parties will be invited to meet the band during Monday evening rehearsals in September.

About the Band

​

The band is a 40 member community wind orchestra based in Keston, near Biggin Hill. 

 

Formed in 2012, the band brings together instrumentalists of varying backgrounds and experience.  We perform around 6 - 8 concerts a year, either around the Biggin Hill area or the wider South East London and North Kent areas.

​

Our repertoire is mainly popular music, from traditional concert band standards to contemporary pop and music from stage and screen. Although most members play to a nominal Grade 3 or above, several have played professionally and many will play in other amateur and semi-professional ensembles. 

​

As MD, you will:

​

  • Lead our rehearsals and set the style of the band

  • Select music and themes for our programmes with the assistance of the Band Committee

  • Support recruitment and fundraising initiatives

​​

The ideal candidate will have:

 

  • A demonstrable background in musicianship. Previous experience of leading a similar size band is an advantage.

  • Possible experience of working as a music educator.

  • Patience and a good sense of humour.

​​

All of this with the purpose of improving the band and delivering fun, high quality performances.

​

The role is part-time (voluntary) and you will be reimbursed reasonable expenses.  It would suit someone who is looking for leadership experience to complement their career development. Previous incumbents have included trainee military Bandmasters and professional musicians developing conducting skills.

​

The band rehearses every Monday evening between 8pm and 9.30pm and performs concerts in two seasons; May to July, and October to December.
